We are seeking an Accountant to manage our accounts (including our property portfolio and investments), and financial year-end preparation.  Working with the Grants Manager, you will hold operational responsibility for the accuracy, compliance, and reporting of the Trust’s finances.

  1. Financial Operations & Cash Management
  • Ledger Management: Record weekly financial transactions, complete bank reconciliations, and work with our Grants Manager on the payment of grants.
  • Cash Flow Control: Monitor and manage cash flows throughout the year to ensure sufficient liquidity for grant payouts and Trust administration..
  • Banking & Payroll: Calculate monthly employee salary, comply with HMRC payroll requirements, and handle communications with the Trust’s bankers.
  • Bill Payments: Process payments by BACS as first authoriser.
  1. Investment & Property Accounting
  • Investment Portfolios: Obtain, record, and review monthly investment values. Analyse quarterly yields from investment managers.
  • Commercial Property: Coordinate with property agents regarding the Trust’s commercial properties, ensuring timely receipt of quarterly rents, service charges and insurance.
  1. Year-End, Taxation & Audit
  • Audit Preparation: Serve as the first contact for the external auditors. Prepare comprehensive Excel working papers for draft accounts.
  • Tax Compliance: Complete and submit quarterly VAT returns and manage ad-hoc Trust tax returns when requested by HMRC.
  • Budgeting: Prepare and present the annual grants and expenses budget.
  1. Committee Support & Compliance
  • Trustee Reporting: Maintain and present portfolio figures at quarterly Trustee and FIP meetings.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Be aware of compliance regulations with the Charity Commission and other relevant statutory bodies.
  • Internal Controls: Working with Trustees to verify BACS grant payments to ensure error-free payment.

Person Specification

  • Experience: Proven experience as an Accountant, Senior Bookkeeper, or Financial Controller, ideally within the charity or trust sector.
  • Qualifications: Minimum AAT level 4 qualified ideally. Consideration may be given of AAT 3 if the candidate has suitable charity or Trust accounts experience
  • Audit & Tax: Direct experience preparing year-end reports, managing external audits, and finalising VAT/HMRC returns.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to deliver clear financial information to the Board of Trustees.
  • Status and hours: Part-time, approximately 4 to 5 hours per week + meeting attendance. This is to be a self-employed contractor role. Hours will vary month to month and flexibility is required.
